In the context of being a wheel part, the word is from Old English “spaca,” which means “spoke of a wheel, radius.” It is related to “spicing” of the same origin, which means “large nail” — from the Proto-Indo-European base word “spei,” which means sharp point, and is also the root of the word “spike” (via Etymonline).
Even though our random first guess, “wound,” didn’t turn up much info, we had turned two tiles green by the third guess with “chore.” Unluckily, we tried the words “stoke” and “smoke” as our fourth and fifth guesses, respectively — they both had four letters in the correct position but the second tile was still gray.
