Eilish McColgan’s London Marathon debut is in doubt because of a knee problem.

The British half-marathon record holder, 32, has withdrawn from a media event scheduled for Friday morning.

“Frustratingly, over the past few days, I’ve picked up a niggle in my knee,” she said.

“I am waiting to see how it responds to treatment and want to give that as long as possible before I make a final decision on whether to race in Sunday’s TCS London Marathon.”

Commonwealth 10,000m champion McColgan is preparing to make her first appearance over the 26.2-mile distance.

The Scot, who was forced to postpone her London Marathon debut last October because of a medical issue, smashed her own British record to win the Berlin Half Marathon earlier this month.

McColgan, who has delayed travelling to London, is set to issue a further update by 14:00 BST on Friday.

Kenya’s marathon record holder Brigid Kosgei, Olympic champion Peres Jepchirchir and 2022 winner Yalemzerf Yehualaw are all set to compete in a quality women’s line-up.

Genzebe Dibaba, the 1500m world record holder, and reigning Olympic 5,000m and 10,000m champion Sifan Hassan.

Sunday is the 43rd staging of the event and the first to be held in the spring since 2019. The past three London Marathons were in the autumn because of the Covid-19 pandemic.
