Britain’s Oliver Crawford has missed out on a place in the Australian Open main draw after losing to Vit Kopriva in the final round of qualifying.

The 24-year-old, bidding to reach the main draw of a major for the first time, lost 6-4 6-4 to Czech Kopriva.

He was the only Briton to reach the final round of qualifying matches.

Crawford, who was born in South Carolina to two parents from Birmingham, switched his nationality from the United States last week.

The world number 213 claimed his first win under the British flag when he defeated Belarusian Ilya Ivashka, before beating Italy’s Francesco Passaro a day later.

Britain’s Heather Watson and Jan Choinski fell at the first hurdle in qualifying while Francesca Jones, Harriet Dart, Ryan Peniston and Billy Harris lost in the second round.

Crawford’s loss means there will be seven British singles players at the first Grand Slam of 2024 – Andy Murray, Emma Raducanu, Cameron Norrie, Katie Boulter, Dan Evans, Jack Draper and Jodie Burrage.
