Police in Alabama shared more details about Carlee Russell, a 25-year-old woman who has returned home after being reported missing over the weekend.
At a press briefing Wednesday afternoon, Hoover Police Chief Nick Derzis said that the investigation into Russell’s disappearance is not over and investigators are still working to account for the 49 hours she was missing.
Carlethia “Carlee” Nichole Russell returned home on foot Saturday night after she was reported missing off a highway in a Birmingham suburb Thursday night. Prior to her disappearance, Russell called 911 to report a toddler walking along the interstate, the Hoover Police Department said in a statement.
Deriz played a recording of the 911 call during the conference.
“I think it’s a little boy,” Russel told the 911 operator. “It’s a white t-shirt it doesn’t look like he has any pants on. It looks like a diaper.”
However, Deriz said they did not receive reports of a missing child in that area and that Carlee’s 911 call remains the only timely report of a child on the interstate.
On Tuesday, Hoover police told USA TODAY officers spoke to Russell but weren’t able to “publicly share the details” from the interview. Russell’s parents, in an appearance on NBC’s “Today” show also urged the public not to speculate about her disappearance.
