3 officers shot in Rochester by man trying to break into ex-girlfriend’s home

Three police officers were shot and wounded in Rochester by a man who was allegedly trying to break into his ex-girlfriend’s home, authorities said Saturday.

Officers assigned to the Rochester Police Department’s Genesee section responded to the residence on Friday around 10:15 p.m., after emergency services received a call about the alleged break-in, according to police.

The 911 caller also warned that the suspect, whom he identified as his girlfriend’s ex, was a pistol permit holder and could be armed.

When authorities arrived on the scene — located on the 600 block of Chili Avenue — they spotted the suspect still outside the house. As they approached, he fired off several shots “without warning at close range,” striking two officers, Rochester Police Chief David Smith said during a Saturday morning news conference.

The man who called 911 was also shot several times during a subsequent gunfire exchange. Authorities said he too was armed and also fired shots.

The suspect then fled the scene, though he was located several blocks away by another officer, who was also shot, Smith said. The other officers on the scene returned fire, striking the suspect multiple times. He was pronounced dead, and has not yet been identified.

Of the officers wounded, one was shot multiple times in the upper body and is listed in stable condition, Smith said. Another was shot in the upper body, rushed to surgery and is listed in critical but stable condition, while the third suffered serious injuries but is also stable.

The 911 caller, meanwhile, remains in serious but non-life-threatening condition, according to Smith.

Authorities have not released the identities of the officers involved. An investigation into the matter is ongoing.
