Two students were injured Wednesday morning in a “knife incident” at a Hudson Valley middle school.
The “student-on-student” incident occurred near the start of the school day at Monhagen Middle School in Middletown.
The school remains on lockdown but started dismissing students early so authorities could investigate. Students who take the bus were dismissed first followed by parent/guardian pickup.
Officials said the two students were transported for medical care.
Witnesses said a fight broke out while a large group of eight graders were assembled.
“I saw a student walking like this (holding side), I assume that’s the one that got stabbed,” Jaiden Mojica, a student, told ABC 7 New York. “I came back from breakfast over to the eighth-grade wing where I saw a big crowd. The fight had just finished and then the kid was walking from there this way. So I assume he was going to the nurse.”
The school district noted there was no intruder at the school and the incident was isolated to a single area.
“What happened today is not OK,” Amy Creeden, Middletown Schools superintendent, said. “It is very concerning, it is upsetting, My heart hurts. Our young people and our school community need us. Today is a very difficult day.”
The school said the students involved were in police custody.
The incident came less than a month after Middletown High School, which is in the same school district, was closed for a day after four simultaneous fights broke out
