There’s no doubt that December is a big month for shopping and spending, but more and more these days, I’m always looking for ways to save. I’m a longtime, deeply devoted thrift-shopper, and being born and raised in Florida, I can imagine few better places to feed my habit.
I’ve been shopping at thrift stores more than ever lately, and it’s shown me how many surprisingly practical household items are donated. People tend to think of thrift shopping as a good way to save on crystal glassware or vintage art and clothes, and it’s true! But along with all the decorative trinkets are crutches and office supplies and gardening tools and exercise equipment and different types of light bulbs and hardware — tons of useful stuff for everyday life.
I’ve grown into the habit of either thrifting things I need, or crafting it on my own. This holiday season, I decided to make my own Christmas decorations using paper and cardboard I’d otherwise recycle, and to buy everything else secondhand. When it comes to wrapping presents for my family and friends, I’ve reconsidered what a “gift box” can be and found I already had several in my kitchen!
Why You Shouldn’t Recycle Any of Your Cereal Boxes Before the Holidays
In case you haven’t noticed, food comes in its own packaging, and sometimes nice, reusable packaging, too! I love to have panettone around the house for breakfast this time of year, and it’s such a sweet bonus that the paper it comes wrapped in is always gorgeous enough for gifts. I’m never without cans of LaCroix in my fridge, no matter the time of year, and their boxes are the perfect square-rectangle size and shape for presents.
The best boxes, though, are the flat and narrow boxes cereal comes in, because they’re almost identical in size and shape to those classic white garment boxes that are perfect for that thrifted 100% cashmere scarf for your mom that you couldn’t believe you found (believe it!).
How to Turn a Cereal Box into a Gift Box
To use a cereal box to wrap a gift, of course, you have to be done with the cereal, unless you choose to decant it (which, maybe you should). Here’s how I like to make my cereal gift boxes:
If you have the time, you can skip the wrapping paper altogether and just paint the box in a festive design before slapping a ribbon on top, or pass the art project to your kid! You’ll save money, and give your cereal boxes a little more life before recycling them. It’s guaranteed to be a fun conversation starter. What’s not to love?
