The U.S. Department of the Interior issued a final environmental analysis Monday on BP (NYSE:BP) and Equinor’s (NYSE:EQNR) proposed Empire Wind project offshore Long Island, New York, setting the stage for final government approval within months.
The project proposes as many as 147 wind turbines and up to two offshore substations with two cable routes located 12 nautical miles from Long Island and 17 nautical miles from Long Branch, New Jersey.
Under the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management’s preferred option, Empire Wind would be able to install as many as 57 wind turbines and two offshore substations, which would generate an expected 2,076 MW of power.
The BOEM said it plans to issue a record of decision on the project this fall.
BP (BP) and Equinor (EQNR) have asked New York to approve a 54% price increase for their Empire and Beacon wind projects near Long Island, citing “unprecedented and escalating cost increases.”
