    • The stage play is part of Stranger Things‘ expansion beyond the core series, with potential spin-offs and an animated series in the works.

Stranger Things season 5 secrets that will shine a light on Hawkins’ past will be revealed ahead of the final season’s debut in the upcoming prequel play, Stranger Things: The First Shadow, according to writer Kate Trefry. The long-running Netflix hit sci-fi series will come to a close, as the walls between 1980’s Hawkins and the Upside Down break down. Stranger Things: The First Shadow will turn the clocks back to 1959, exploring the youths of many Hawkins residents and the downfall of a boy with strange powers.

Though Stranger Things season 5’s production is still on pause as the SAG-AFTRA strike continues, Trefry revealed to SFX Magazine (via GamesRadar) that audiences may get their first glimpse at the final chapter through her upcoming stage play once it debuts in London. The writer hinted that not only will The First Shadow build on what currently released seasons have revealed, but season 5 will have callbacks and references to the play that will reward those who set out to see the show on stage. Check out Trefry’s full explanation below:

There are referential sequences and imagery and callbacks and flashbacks to the events of the play in Stranger Things season 5 that will still make sense to you if you don’t see the play, but you’ll have a deeper understanding of them if you do. It’s in conversation with the seasons prior and the season to come. It really informs everything that you have seen and will see.

Stranger Things: The First Shadow Is Just The Beginning Of The Franchise’s Expansion

While Stranger Things is no stranger to expanded media thanks to its various comic miniseries, novels, and spin-offs, promotion for Stranger Things: The First Shadow indicates that it is set to be a pivotal piece for the final season. While the stage play will give a glimpse into the lives of David Harbour and Winona Ryder’s Jim Hopper and Joyce Byers’, the show will also explore the origins of Jamie Campbell Bower’s Vecna when he was known as Henry Creel. With Vecna still at large following Stranger Things season 4’s pyrrhic conclusion, The First Shadow can offer further insight into the experiences that turned him against humanity.

This is not the end of Stranger Things‘ expansion beyond the core series, however, even though Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) and the core groups’ story may be coming to a close. Alongside the stage play, there have been talks of various potential spin-offs that will expand the show beyond its 1980s America setting, including a confirmed Stranger Things animated series. However, with few details publicly released and production on pause for season 5, it is unclear just how the series will tie into the current events of the series.

Stranger Things is one of Netflix’s most successful properties, having captivated audiences since it first began in 2016 and expanded into a successful multi-media franchise. As such, audiences will be even more eager to check out Stranger Things: The First Shadow for their first hints at season 5’s direction. However, with the stage show not currently confirmed to have a recorded version that will be available for audiences worldwide, viewers will be relieved to hear the fifth and final season can still fully be understood without it.

Stranger Things seasons 1 to 4 are currently available on Netflix.
