‘Scream 7’ Star Gives a Thrilling Update on the Intense, Star-Studded Sequel: “I Lost My Voice” [Exclusive]

In her short yet incredibly fruitful career, Mckenna Grace has earned quite an impressive list of horror credits. Not only is she the performer behind one of the primary characters in the new Ghostbusters film series, but she’s also thrilled and chilled audiences in other genre favorites like Malignant, Annabelle Comes Home, and Amityville: The Awakening. Up next, she’ll climb to what many would consider to be the pinnacle of horror thanks to her appearance in Kevin Williamson’s Scream 7. During a new installment of Collider’s Ladies Night with Perri Nemiroff, Grace opened up about her experience on the highly anticipated film that features a solid blend of newcomers and franchise favorites alike.

Noting her sprawling background in the genre, Grace told Nemiroff that there were several first-time experiences for her during the production of the slasher flick, adding, “There were a lot of horror filmmaking firsts that I cannot say yet” — a sentiment that’s fair enough when considering just how much the plot hinges on complete secrecy. One of the firsts she was able to reveal gives us a peek into the likely terrible time her character has in the new movie, with Grace sharing,

“I did lose my voice, and that was a first… It was so cool! I lost my voice from how much yelling and screaming are involved for those types of films. But yeah, I lost my voice, and then the next day, I had an audition for the biggest musical ever, and I was like, ‘You’re joking. Of course.’”

Crossing Paths With Cinematic Icons

Grace, along with others like Asa Germann (Gen V) and Anna Camp (You), are fresh meat in the Scream universe, up against stalwart staples like Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, and the somehow back-from-the-dead David Arquette, Matthew Lillard, and Scott Foley. For someone as into the genre as the Gifted star, working alongside some absolute icons was an incredibly exciting part of the gig.

“Oh my God, literally while I was shooting Regretting You, because I had wrapped on Scream and they were still shooting, I was shooting Regretting You, and I went and visited set, and I just got to sit there and watch Sidney Prescott in front of me do her thing, and I was just totally tripping. Getting to be on a set with Neve Campbell? Nobody even talk to me! Oh my God.”

As for her favorite set piece from the films that came before, Grace said,

“Oh my God, I mean, just the kitchen from the first one is so big and iconic. The house from the first one… I mean, Sidney’s entire house is really memorable. Or just the beginning sequence with Drew Barrymore whenever she’s in the kitchen making popcorn. Iconic. Is it the second or the third one whenever Sidney is in a play and they have that big sequence? That was crazy. That one stuck with me because that’s, like, so… Ugh!”
