The Marvel Cinematic Universe has had to retool a lot of its plans for Phases 4, 5, and 6, from issues related to the global pandemic to inner struggles at Marvel Studios. The Multiverse Saga began with Kang the Conqueror as the next big bad for the Avengers, with Jonathan Majors bringing the Marvel foe to life from the comics.
During his appearance on Breakfast Club Power 105.1 FM, Hawkeye actor Jeremy Renner chimed in on Majors’ firing, after the star was found guilty for two misdemeanor counts, both for assault and harassment. The original Avengers actor first stated, “I don’t know. I don’t know what the difference is between gossip and anything else.”
The MCU veteran went on to explain that “I don’t know enough about Jonathan and his situation to know.” Renner stressed that “I know they had big plans for that character, that’s for sure. Whatever transpired…that sucks, I think.”
In conclusion, the Clint Barton actor felt that “the due diligence really has to be played out.” Majors’ final appearance in the MCU timeline was in 2023’s Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, as the post-credits scene saw numerous Kang variants coming together.
Initially slated as Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, once Majors’ legal controversy was shrouding the franchise, Marvel Studios took the course of action by not only letting go of the actor, but erasing Kang from The Multiverse Saga. At San Diego Comic-Con 2024, the new direction became clear as Robert Downey Jr. was announced to return to the franchise, but with a twist.
The Iron Man star was revealed to be playing Victor von Doom, a.k.a. Doctor Doom, in both Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, alongside the Russo brothers helming both films. The first team-up movie finished principal photography on September 19, 2025.
While the Avengers: Doomsday cast has finished filming, there are no details yet on when the Phase 6 finale will start production. The Multiverse Saga will end with Avengers: Secret Wars, set to release on December 18, 2027.
As far as Renner coming back as Hawkeye, he has denied that he is in any of the upcoming Avengers installments. The MCU will continue Phase 6 in January 2026, with the Wonder Man TV show premiering on Disney+.
