Joe Cornish shares that negotiations are still ongoing for the potential second season of Lockwood & Co.

Lockwood & Co is a book series written by Jonathan Stroud that was adapted to a TV series by Netflix. Joe Cornish directed the first season with eight episodes, which was released last month. Although the show has been making waves online, Lockwood & Co season 2 isn’t guaranteed yet. Joe Cornish sits down with Collider to discuss the series.

Even Joe Cornish isn’t sure on what the future holds for Lockwood & Co, but Cornish is hopeful they can make two more seasons at Netflix. When asked about the second season of the series, he admitted, “Well listen, there are five Lockwood & Co books written by the very brilliant Jonathan Stroud. We’ve adapted the first two for the first season, and the books get better and better. The character relationships get more complex, the world-building expands, [there are] twists and turns, and it gets epic, and amazing set pieces.”

He continued, “So, we would love to get the chance to put all that stuff on screen, but at the same time, we are very proud of the first season. If you want to find out what’s beyond that door and you can’t wait for more, then it’s in the books.”

He’s also uncertain if Netflix is satisfied with the show’s outcome, although he shared that there’s an ongoing talk about the project. When asked about Netflix’s feedback on the show, he said, “You don’t find out. I think we did very well for the first couple of weeks. I think we have another meeting coming up, which I will not attend because I’m an artistic type. I like to keep my attention towards the creative side of it, you know? And we’ll see. It’s a mystery to me.”

A Project Joe Cornish Has Always Wanted to Do

Joe Cornish was asked if there’s any project he’d wanted to do if he’s given a budget for it. The director didn’t answer right away as he carefully thought about it. He said, “If I could get the financing to make anything I wanted? That’s a good question. I would need thinking time. But in terms of the projects I have, I mean I would have loved to have made the screenplay I wrote for Snow Crash.”

For years, Cornish has been passionate about Snow Crash but knows that the project is too ambitious for the current time. The reason the show didn’t make it to the screen was because it was too complex and costly to make. When asked what happened to the project, Cornish shared, “It got quite a long way at Paramount. They decided to do their Ghost in the Shell remake instead. They bounced us back. We turned it into an episodic TV show with really brilliant scripts by Michael Bacall. We took it to pretty much every single streamer and TV financier.”

He continued, “Me, Michael Bacall, Frank Marshall – the most successful producer in history – couldn’t get anybody to take the risk. It’s a pretty conservative time out there. [There are] a lot of IP and video games, and for stuff over a certain budget, I think it’s quite difficult to get people to take the risk. And Snow Crash is just too cool.”
