Disney+ is the streaming hub for all things Disney, from classic animated movies to the newest in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In the last few years, Disney+ has come out with some original projects that include massive hits like Loki and The Mandalorian and a few misses like Willow and National Treasure: Edge of History. However, when the young adult musical series High School Musical: The Musical: The Series came out, it really changed the game. With the appeal of a Disney Channel Original Movie classic and a new, refreshing, and talented cast, this project had us up and dancing with excitement.
High School Musical: The Musical: The Series follows a group of high school students who are putting on a stage production of the beloved Disney Channel movie, High School Musical. High School Musical elicits an undeniable sense of nostalgia in all of us, and this Disney+ series rebooted our love for the franchise in a way that skyrocketed it into pop culture relevancy. Ahead of the fourth and final season of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series premiering, here is a cast and character guide to make sure you know who’s who from the Disney+ original series.
Corbin Bleu, Lucas Grabeel, Bart Johnson, Monique Coleman, and Alyson Reed as Themselves
After the rising success of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series after the first season, it was only fitting to introduce members of the original cast to join in on the fun. In the upcoming fourth season, expect Corbin Bleu, Lucas Grabeel, Bart Johnson, Monique Coleman, and Alyson Reed to take part as themselves. Of course, while we await the rest of the season, we still have our fingers crossed that stars Zac Efron, Vanessa Hudgens, and Ashley Tisdale will make an appearance.
Olivia Rodrigo as Nini
Even though she made her last appearance on this show in the third season, the impact of pop music megastar Olivia Rodrigo is still felt throughout this franchise. After a show goes on for some time, characters come and go, and letting go of Rodrigo as Nini was a difficult one. Her undeniable talent, songwriting abilities, and chemistry on and off the screen with costar Joshua Bassett made the first few seasons of this show unforgettable. After her departure from the show, Rodrigo went on to cement her name in the pop music space with her 2021 debut album Sour making rounds throughout the industry and having an insane award season.
Matt Cornett as E.J.
Don’t worry: E.J., who was part of the original core cast, will be a recurring character in the series. E.J. is played by Matt Cornett in the series and easily established his charm and wit to become a quick fan favorite and comfort character. E.J., unfortunately, is no longer a student at East High and will not be a regular in the final season. Cornett fits into the family-friendly, bright, high energy perfectly, his most recent project since the start of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series being 2022’s Zombies 3.
Larry Saperstein as Big Red
Larry Saperstein‘s Big Red is also going to be a recurring character in the series. Big Red has always felt the most reliable character, maybe because he was Ricky’s best friend. He always feels like everyone’s friend and his character development throughout the seasons was refreshing to watch. As we look to the end of this fantastic series, we cannot wait to see how Saperstein’s career develops going forward.
Joe Serafini as Seb
Seb is a junior in Season 4 of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series and is known for being the big diva at East High, a born-again Sharpay Evans. Despite being a dynamic performer, Seb does have a calm soft side that bodes well for a relationship with Carlos, played by Joe Serafini. This memorable character sets a great foundation for the future of this talented actor after the show’s end.
Liamani Segura as Emmy
Even when characters are introduced in a show’s later seasons, some of them just make their mark. The multi-talented Liamani Segura made her High School Musical: The Musical: The Series as the character Emmy in Season 3. The young firecracker was cast as young Anna in the camp’s production of Frozen. Segura has a deep online presence where her performance chops in both acting and singing that you should check out because it speaks for itself. Of course, she was made into a main cast member.
Kate Reinders as Miss Jenn
Even in young adult shows like High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, a consistent adult presence is always good. Miss Jenn, the East High drama teacher, is played by Kate Reinders. With this fourth season being the show’s final, Miss Jenn’s character arc is really focused on her students as most of them enter their senior year. Reinders’s acting presence is not too extensive, and it is safe to say that this hit show is a career highlight.
Frankie A. Rodriguez as Carlos
Frankie A. Rodriguez plays Carlos in High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. Carlos is a talented actor and performer that was cast as Lumiere in season 2’s Beauty and the Beast production and Olaf in Season 3’s Frozen production. Carlos has a passion for choreography and feels right at home in the theater. Rodriguez also saw his big break with his role in this show and we ar looking forward to seeing where his career could go.
Julia Lester as Ashlyn
In the first season of the show, Ashlyn was cast as Miss Darbus in the school production of High School Musical and was cast as Belle in the second season’s production of Beauty and the Beast. Ashlyn is played by Julia Lester, and she is a powerhouse vocalist. This show is very music-centric and Lester’s voice takes it to a new level. Lester was nominated for a Tony for her performance as Little Red Riding Hood in the 2022 Broadway production of Into The Woods.
Dara Reneé as Kourtney
Every main character needs a spritely BFF. Nini’s best friend Kourtney was played by Dara Reneé. Kourtney is a out-of-this-world personality that has a deep interest in fashion and makeup, not to mention her killer vocals. Throughout the seasons, Kourtney really grows into herself and stands out on her own. If you are interested in seeing what’s next for Reneé, catch her in the upcoming film
Descendants: The Rise of Red.
Sofia Wylie as Gina
Sofia Wylie is a scene-stealer. From the first season, her talent seemed to be unmatched. From her singing voice to her work on the dance floor, Wylie’s role as Gina could not have been better cast. Gina is confident, loyal, and full of heart. After four seasons, things are bound to change for these characters and Gina finds herself getting leading roles and finding love. Wylie’s most recent project before the final season of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series was in 2022’s The School for Good and Evil.
Joshua Bassett as Ricky
We all kind of fell in love with Ricky throughout the seasons of this show. Joshua Bassett made Ricky’s character his own. From a young, timid, and talented kid auditioning last minute for a role in the school musical to win Nini back to a confident and independent performer, Ricky’s character development is something to behold. Bassett has also been able to establish a very successful career in the music industry in the form of a few singles and even an EP.
