Doctor Who reveals the first detailed look at the Fourteen Doctor’s new sonic screwdriver as David Tennant returns as the Time Lord. Tennant will star as a new incarnation of the Doctor to celebrate the 60th-anniversary of the long-running sci-fi series. The actor will be reunited with returning showrunner Russell T Davies, Catherine Tate, and several other stars from his Tenth Doctor tenure in three special episodes airing in the fall.

Following the reveal of a new poster featuring Tennant’s Fourteenth Doctor, the official Doctor Who Twitter account has formally revealed the latest model of the sonic screwdriver that the enigmatic new incarnation will wield across the upcoming anniversary specials. Check out the video below:

The video introduces “the Fourteenth Doctor’s sonic screwdriver,” giving a detailed look at the new tool. Alongside showing off the device’s exterior, the video takes a surprising peak inside the sonic device, revealing the various circuits and energy sources that keep the life-saving object going.

The History of the Doctor’s Trusty Sonic Screwdriver

First wielded by Patrick Troughton’s Second Doctor in 1968’s “Fury from the Deep,” the Sonic Screwdriver is a trusty multi-purpose tool capable of unlocking most doors, accessing computer systems, tracking and monitoring life forms, alongside a whole host of other features that have helped the Doctor narrowly save the day. Despite being commonly used throughout the classic series, producer John Nathan-Turner would destroy the device during the Fifth Doctor’s (Peter Davison) era, ending its use throughout the classic era. Despite this, the device reappeared when Doctor Who returned to TV screens in 2005, becoming a mainstay of the show once more.

Across the modern era of Doctor Who, the device has had multiple redesigns between incarnations and between the show’s epochs, be it due to it being damaged, lost, or outright destroyed. As such, each incarnation has had a design unique to them, from the larger, extendable clawed design of Matt Smith’s Eleventh Doctor to the curved feature of Jodie Whittaker’s Thirteenth Doctor. While Tennant’s had the Thirteenth Doctor’s model upon regeneration, the sonic screwdriver was destroyed in a comic set between “Power of the Doctor” and the upcoming anniversary specials, leading to the new device featured across those episodes.

The new Doctor Who surprising video reveal for the Fourteenth Doctor’s newest Sonic Screwdriver leaves more anticipation for the upcoming 60th-anniversary specials. After brief glimpses from set videos and trailers, the video gives the best glimpse at the device, likely inspiring cosplayers and prop makers hoping to complete their recreations of the Fourteenth Doctor’s ensemble. However, while Tennant’s new incarnation may utilize the latest model throughout the new season, many may wonder if this new variant of the mainstay device will be wielded by Ncuti Gatwa’s Fifteenth Doctor in season 14.
