An actress of many talents, there’s no questioning just how much Charlize Theron shines in the action genre. From Mad Max: Fury Road to the recent arrival of The Old Guard 2, Theron consistently delivers a kick-ass performance that drops jaws in impressive action set pieces, without ever sacrificing emotional and dramatic quality. This sentiment is on full display in her 2017 action thriller Atomic Blonde, with Theron shining once again, this time under the directorial eye of David Leitch, a man also known for co-directing John Wick.
Thankfully for Theron fans, this underrated entry in her filmography will soon be available to stream on a brand-new platform. As of December 1, 2025, Atomic Blonde is officially joining the ranks of HBO Max, with viewers able to indulge in the chaotic beauty of this LGBTQ+ effort that also stars James McAvoy and John Goodman. The movie finished its 2017 theatrical run just shy of $100 million in global revenue, although it managed to more than triple its reported $30 million budget. Atomic Blonde received plenty of positive praise from critics, earning a “certified fresh” 79% score on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, with the consensus reading, “Atomic Blonde gets enough mileage out of its stylish action sequences — and ever-magnetic star — to make up for a narrative that’s somewhat less hard-hitting than its protagonist.” The movie’s synopsis reads:
“Sensual and savage, Lorraine Broughton is the most elite spy in MI6, an agent who’s willing to use all of her lethal skills to stay alive during an impossible mission. With the Berlin Wall about to fall, she travels into the heart of the city to retrieve a priceless dossier and take down a ruthless espionage ring. Once there, she teams up with an embedded station chief to navigate her way through the deadliest game of spies.”
Charlize Theron Is About to Star in the Biggest Action Movie of the Decade
Several high-profile titles are joining the 2026 theatrical circuit, but perhaps none is more enticing than Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey. Promising to be the most ambitious effort in the great man’s impressive filmography, the film boasts an extraordinary cast list led by Matt Damon in his first leading role in a Nolan film. This cast list also includes the likes of Theron, Robert Pattinson, Zendaya, Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Jon Bernthal, John Leguizamo, Benny Safdie, Elliot Page, and many more.
Atomic Blonde will soon stream on HBO Max. Stay tuned to Collider for more streaming stories.
