There is just over a month until Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, the long-awaited sequel of the 2018 film finally hits theaters, and a new international trailer offers never-seen before footage of the latest adventure of the King of the Seven Seas.
It has taken five years for James Wan to bring the hero played by Jason Momoa back to the big screen, after the first installment became one of the most successful movies in DC cinema history. However, its arrival has been delayed for so long that the release coincides with the end of an era for the franchise. Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom will not only be the last DC and Warner Bros. film in 2023, it will also be the last in the current canon that began in 2013 with Man of Steel, while James Gunn and Peter Safran work on developing their own vision of the DCU. Which means it will be the last time fans will see Momoa as Arthur Curry, although the actor could return playing a new character.
After the release of the film’s first trailer in September, a new international version shows new action scenes, great underwater confrontations and delves into the relationship between Orm and Arthur, which will be the heart of the story in this new installment:
The video also shows Patrick Wilson’s character being affected by the powers of the black trident, the weapon that Yahya Abdul-Mateen II’s Black Manta has obtained, with which he will seek to carry out his revenge against Aquaman. The villain’s plans are to destroy everything his enemy loves, forcing Arthur to go in search of his half-brother, so they can save Atlantis together.
Orm and Arthur’s Relationship Will Be Explored
The first Aquaman film, in addition to being the official presentation of the character despite having appeared in Justice League, explores the hero’s origins and his connection to Atlantis through the relationship he develops with Amber Heard’s Mera. Much of the adventure that Arthur lives in that movie is with her, while Orm is the big villain even though Black Manta also plays an important role.
In Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, Arthur is already the great King of Atlantis but since there is a threat to his home and the other underwater kingdoms, his alliance with Orm is more than logical, since he was the king of Atlantis before and knows very well the responsibility that this entails. In fact, James Wan confirmed that his original plans were always those for the sequel, to delve deeper into the brothers’ relationship.
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom will also feature the returns of Heard as Mera, Nicole Kidman as Atlanna, Dolph Lundgren as Nereus, Randall Park as Dr. Stephen Shin, and Temuera Morrison as Tom Curry. Joining them will be Vincent Regan as Atlan, Portuguese actress Jani Zhao as Stingray, Indya Moore as Karshon, and Pilou Asbæk in an undisclosed role.
