A Million Little Things is coming to an end after five seasons. Created by DJ Nash and premiered on ABC in 2018, A Million Little Things follows a tight-knit circle of friends in Boston who, after a member of the group shockingly dies by suicide, realize they need to start living life to the fullest extent as they to cope with the tragic loss. The show’s title is derived from the unattributed quote, “Friendship isn’t a big thing – it’s a million little things.”

A Million Little Things features an ensemble cast that includes David Giuntoli, Grace Park, Romany Malco, Christina Moses, Allison Miller, James Roday Rodriguez, Stéphanie Szostak, Tristan Byon, and Lizzy Greene. Premiered a year after This is Us became a breakout hit on NBC and revitalized the genre, ABC’s adjacent family drama spent its first two-and-a-half seasons in the highly-coveted Thursday nighttime slot before moving to Wednesdays midway through season 3. This is Us wrapped up earlier this year after six seasons and now, A Million Little Things is set to come to an end as well.

Variety has brought word that A Million Little Things is ending after season 5. The series will return and debut its final episodes on Wednesday, February 8 at 10 p.m. on ABC. The Million Little Things cast announced the news to fans in a video that can be viewed above, while the show’s creator, Nash, issued a heartfelt statement to fans addressing the announcement and expressing his excitement for audiences to see the final season. Read what Nash said below:

I know seeing this show end may be sad for many people (especially my mom who watches live every week), but I always knew I wanted to follow these friends for 5 seasons and leave them when the time was right. When we started making our show, I never could have imagined this incredible community of ‘Millionaires’ who would come together and not only watch, but also share with each other their personal struggles, their pain and ultimately their true grit. I am both honored and humbled by all of it and am so in awe of the incredible actors, writers, directors and crew who lend their talent to make our show. I am also so grateful that ABC now makes mental health awareness one of the top issues for which it advocates. Terrence and I can’t wait for the Millionaires to watch what we have planned for our final season.

Why Is A Million Little Things Ending After Season 5?

During its earlier seasons, A Million Little Things proved to be a strong draw for ABC in the drama category, despite its mixed critical reception, though its live audience numbers began to diminish during the later seasons. However, that wasn’t the case after delayed viewership was factored in. In fact, A Million Little Things season 4 was the network’s top performer in terms of delayed viewership, with a massive 249 percent increase in total viewers from the live audience.

With news of the show’s shrinking viewership largely overblown, that doesn’t appear to be the main reason why A Million Little Things is ending after season 5. Instead, it is simply the right time for the show to come to an end. Based on Nash’s comments above, it seems the creator always had a five-season plan in mind for the series. Now, the only thing left to do is hope that A Million Little Things season 5 provides a satisfying end to its emotional story when the ABC drama returns for one final outing on February 8.
