Now that the second season of Our Flag Means Death is out, it’s time to dive back into the world of our favorite band of misfit pirates. Despite being gone for a while, audiences are surely enthused that the series has returned. Last we left them, Stede Bonnet and the rest of the scoundrels on the show were left in a dire situation. With Blackbeard back to his old and vicious ways and with Stede without a ship or a full crew, we’re at the edge of our seats to see how everything will work out in Season 2. This is doubly true after watching the first episode of the show.
And while Season 2 has been off to a good start, there are some questions that we simply need answers to. Here are ten questions we have after the premier of the second season of Our Flag Means Death.
10 Will Jim Still Be Going After the Siete Gallos?
The show’s first season explored some parts of Jim’s backstory. It’s revealed that JIm’s entire family were all murdered by the Siete Gallos. This set Jim on a path of revenge as they vowed to one day seek vengeance for all that’s been done to them. While Jim has already taken out two members of the gang, there are still a few of them left out there. Will we see Jim finally fulfill their vow or have they chosen to take the high road and let go of this grudge?
9 Why Did Blackbeard Take Jim as a Crew Member?
By the end of the first season, we see Blackbeard back to his barbaric ways. When he takes control of the Revenge, he also abandons most of the crew on an island in the middle of the ocean. The two crew members that he takes with him are Frenchie and Jim. While he explains that Frenchie will be useful due to his impeccable sewing skills, he doesn’t really explain why he opted to take Jim too. Hopefully, we’ll get some answers to this question as more is revealed about Jim.
8 What Are Zheng Yi Sao’s Plans?
Zheng Yi Sao is one of the new characters that are to be introduced in the second season of Our Flag Means Death. Like Edward Teach, Zheng Yi Sao is also based on a real pirate from history. When we first meet the pirate queen Zheng Yi Sao, she’s posing as an ordinary soup merchant.
The truth is eventually revealed when Zheng Yi Sao and her crew capture Stede and what’s left of his crew. Zheng forces Stede to work for her and takes him and his crew to her ship the Red Flag. Not much is revealed about Zheng Yi Sao in the show’s first episode. But considering that she’s a bigshot pirate, we can assume that she’s certainly up to no good.
7 Is the British Royal Navy Still Going After Stede and His Crew?
After escaping from the Royal Privateering Academy and being framed for the murder of Chauncey Badminton, it’s likely the British Royal Navy won’t let such an offense go unpunished. This is why it’s very likely that we’ll be seeing more of the navy in the show’s second season.
6 How Will Stede and Ed Reunite?
Speaking of the Royal Royal Privateering Academy, it’s here where Stede and Ed get separated. Despite planning to escape to China together, the interference courtesy of Chauncey Badminton caused Stede to unintentionally stand up Ed. This breaks Ed’s heart which causes him to revert to his more violent and bloodthirsty Kraken persona.
By the end of the first episode, we see Stede sailing off on the Red Flag. Now that the two pirates are back on the high seas, it’s only a matter of time until they cross paths once again.
5 Will Stede and Ed Get Back Together?
Stede and Ed’s burgeoning relationship was one of the best parts of the show’s first season. And while the two are seemingly broken up, it’s clear that they still have strong feelings for one another. And given that the creator of the show David Jenkins has gone on record to say that will only have three seasons, we’re sure that the show won’t waste any time exploring the relationship that the two share.
4 Is Spanish Jackie Going to Retaliate Against Stede and His Crew?
While working for Spanish Jackie at her bar in the Republic of Pirates, Stede and his crew concoct a plan to steal from Jackie. This is possible as she’s chosen the Swede to be one of his husbands. They’re eventually caught and are left to face Spanish Jackie’s wrath. However, things don’t go as they anticipated as Jackie sort of respects the Swede more for daring to betray her.
While things may seem good when the two parties part ways, we never really saw Jackie as the forgiving type. This is why it’s entirely possible that she’ll eventually go after Stede and his crew for trying to steal from her.
3 Is Izzy Actually Dead?
As Blackbeard’s behavior becomes more and more erratic, it’s up to his first mate Izzy to confront the legendary pirate to try to get him to see the error of his ways. Unfortunately for him, Blackbeard isn’t really in the mood to discuss his feelings and ends up shooting him and seemingly leaving him for dead. He promptly promotes Frenchie to the position of first mate and instructs him to dispose of Izzy’s body.
The only reason why we’re still holding out hope that Izzy is still actually alive mainly stems from how abrupt this death was. Considering that he’s Blackbeard’s first mate it would be a waste to write his character off in this manner. We wouldn’t be surprised if Izzy ends up surviving and reappearing down the line.
2 Is Lucius Alive?
Speaking of dead characters, Lucius’ fate is never made clear in the first episode. While we see most of Stede’s crew in the first episode, Lucius is evidently absent. If you’ve somehow forgotten, Blackbeard seemingly kills Lucius by pushing him off the ship. Despite the chances being rather slim, we wouldn’t be surprised to see Lucius back due to the important role he serves on the show.
1 What’s Blackbeard Up To?
By the end of the second season’s first episode, Blackbeard claims that he’ll never go back to shore again and will just continue attacking ships and raiding forever. While it isn’t clear how serious he is about this, it’s not out of the realm of possibility considering his current mental state.
Now, this is obviously Blackbeard attempting to run away from his emotions and inner struggles. And given that season two is supposed to give us a more emotionally vulnerable Blackbeard, something tells us that whatever he’s trying to run away (or should we say sail away?) from will inevitably catch up to him.
