Nebraska tight end Arik Gilbert arrested, burglary on camera

University of Nebraska tight end Arik Gilbert was arrested Tuesday morning after allegedly being caught in the act of stealing over $1,600 worth of goods from a liquor store.

Surveillance video appears to show the 6-foot-5, 275 pound Gilbert hurling a block of cement through the door of the store before kicking down another door to break inside, TMZ reported.

The footage also shows a man with no shirt donning what appears to be a ski mask.

The 21-year-old was soon detained outside SJ’s Liquor & Vape in Lincoln, Neb., around 2 a.m., with the police confiscating items including vapes and lighters.

Police reportedly received a call of a possible break-in and rushed to the scene, surprising Gilbert as he was exiting the store.

At least eight cops officers were ready outside and the football player was reportedly arrested without incident, dropping his bags and holding his hands in the air.

Gilbert was later charged with burglary, a felony for which he could face up to 20 years in prison.

He was released after posting bond and has a court date set for Sept. 27, KOLN Nebraska reported.

“Obviously, really disappointed, really sad for him,” Nebraska football coach Matt Rhule said Tuesday.

“When we took Arik, we knew we had a really good group of people who were going to help him through some of the issues he’s dealing with in his life,” Rhule added.

“I’ve been really proud of the job he’s done this spring and summer. To be honest, during camp he’s had some struggles, he’s been working to overcome them. We have a great group of people here trying to help him and then, obviously, last night happens.”

Gilbert had been a five-star recruit coming out of high school and previously played football at Georgia and Louisiana State University before transferring to Nebraska.
