Ho, yeah! Hulu is reviving “King of the Hill,” the hit animated series that aired 13 seasons on Fox between 1997 and 2009.
According to Deadline, “King of the Hull” co-creators Mike Judge and Greg Daniels are coming back for the revival, as are many of the original cast members. Judge will once again voice everyman father Hank Hill, joining Kathy Najimy as Peggy Hill, Pamela Adlon as Bobby Hill, Stephen Root as Bill, Johnny Hardwick as Dale, and Lauren Tom as Minh.
Notably absent from that cast list is Brittany Murphy, who voiced Hank’s niece Luanne. Murphy died in 2009.
“We are all so excited to welcome back Hank, Peggy, and Bobby, and to see what they have to say about the world we live in and continue the conversations we began years ago,” Craig Erwich, president of ABC Entertainment, Hulu and Disney Branded Television Streaming Originals, said in a statement. “This show has all of the perfect ingredients to meet this moment in animation at Hulu, and we’re so thankful to be having those conversations alongside this talented group.”
“King of the Hill” earned two Emmy Awards during its original run — one for Adlon, and another for the show itself — and another five Emmy nominations. According to Deadline, the show has been one of the most-streamed animated series on Hulu.
A “King of the Hill” revival has been in the works since a 2017 cast reunion at Sketchfest in San Francisco, and now Hulu has given the 20th Television Animation project a straight-to-series order, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
“I’m so lucky to have been a part of this show from the very beginning and couldn’t be more excited to visit Arlen, Texas, once again with Mike, Greg and Saladin, who together are bringing a whole new perspective to the original series,” said Marci Proietto, executive vice president at 20th Television Animation. “We all want to thank the fans for their overwhelming support because they helped make this happen, and I can’t wait to share this new iteration through the lens of 2023 America.”
