Aldi is one of our favorite grocery chains, not only because of their incredible products but also because of their amazing deals. However, one Aldi fan took to Instagram to share a hack to get even more discounts on common cooking essentials in the store and then put the theory to the test.
Instagrammer @thriftytipsandtripsmum headed to their local Aldi in the United Kingdom to prove that the chain’s expiration date policy really works. If you grab an item that expires within five days of purchase, you may be able to get that product for a discounted price (even if it hasn’t officially been marked down).
The user experimented with Aldi’s chicken breast which had an expiration date of the following day. Upon checking out, she asked the cashier if they would give a discount, and they marked the chicken down a whopping 30 percent. This could be successful with any food like milk, bread, and cheese. You can always throw the food in the freezer to expand its life once you bring it home.
An Aldi employee confirmed to The Sun that you can get a discount up to 75 percent off any item until the day of expiration or following day. However, some Aldi employees commented on the post correcting the Instagrammer based on policies at their local store. Some mentioned it only goes up to 30 percent off, while others called attention to the stickers on the item and dismissed the five-day rule that was mentioned in the video.
While it seems as if thoughts and opinions vary on the topic, it certainly doesn’t hurt to ask next time you’re shopping at Aldi. You may just save a few dollars.
The Kitchn reached out to Aldi, but they declined to comment.
