The Witcher: no joke, five new Witcher games coming

Big Announcement: The Witcher: A New Saga Begins isn”t just about The Witcher 4. There”s a new trilogy coming. And more.

Well, that”s where the Kikimora is. CD Projekt Red has just published its own plans for the coming years as part of a strategy update. And with regard to The Witcher, they look pretty lush: In addition to the third Netflix season, there will not only be one new Witcher game, but five! Let”s go through it.

The information is still rather sparse, but at least it substantiates the hints from a few months ago: Behind The Witcher: A New Saga Begins is not only a The Witcher 4 (codename Polaris), but also a The Witcher 5, 6, as well as two other projects. And before anyone starts making the aard sign: Yes, the new saga will not be a direct sequel to The Witcher 3, so it will almost certainly not be called The Witcher 4 in the end, but … you know what we mean.

So, what”s planned?

  • The Witcher: A New Saga Begins: CD Projekt Red is developing an all-new Witcher trilogy that puts a new story at the centre.
  • Project Canis Majoris: Another open-world role-playing game in the Witcher universe being developed by a third-party studio of ex-Witcher veterans.
  • Project Sirius: An innovative look at the Witcher universe that should excite existing and new fans alike. Developed by The Molasses Flood, the team behind The Flame in the Flood. CD Projekt wants to reach a broader audience here, experiment with multiplayer, but the game also offers a story campaign.

What is Project Orion?

On Twitter, CD Projekt briefly outlines what it”s all about: Project Orion is intended to take the Cyberpunk franchise forward and exploit the full potential of this dark future scenario and, by all accounts, become a fully-fledged successor to the role-playing game:

The new Witcher trilogy is being developed over a six-year period, starting with Project Polaris. So with a bit of luck, by 2029 or 2030 we”ll be able to play the entire trilogy already. The technical basis for all these projects will be the Unreal Engine 5, the big open-world role-playing games share the framework that CD Projekt is currently setting up for Polaris. In the investor call on 4 October, the developers confirmed that the three Witcher spin-offs will be full-fledged AAA role-playing games. Incidentally, none of the five games will be a mobile game, CD Projekt reassures.

Besides all the Witcher reveals, there are other announcements. For example, a bona fide sequel to Cyberpunk 2077. And a completely new brand called Hadar. Similar to what Ubisoft has done recently, CD Projekt is positioning itself for the next few years with this strategy and thinking of its own brands in a bigger way than just from game to game. What do you think of this?
