European commission president Ursula von der Leyen has called for “guardrails” around developments in artificial intelligence, at a G7 summit that will discuss how to manage the technology for the first time.

“Artificial Intelligence’s potential benefits for citizens and the economy are great,” von der Leyen said in talks with G7 leaders in Hiroshima on Friday. “At the same time, we need to agree to guardrails to develop AI in the EU, reflecting our democratic values.”

“We want AI systems to be accurate, reliable, safe and non-discriminatory, regardless of their origin,” she said, in remarks shared by her spokesperson.

On Thursday Rishi Sunak indicated that the British government will impose tighter controls on AI if necessary, also saying that “guardrails” will be maintained against risks from the technology.
