Pokémon Legends: Z-A’s Best New Mega Evolution Is One No One Expected

There are several new Mega Evolutions in Pokémon Legends: Z-A, but there is one of them that stands out against all odds. The gameplay mechanic made a huge comeback with the Generation 9 game. Several beloved Mega Evolutions returned, while new ones were introduced. This includes creatures like Mega Greninja, Mega Delphox, and Mega Chesnaught, for example, which are the final forms of the Kalos starters.

Several of the new forms were presented before the game’s release, like Mega Dragonite, Mega Hawlucha, and Mega Victreebel. However, Nintendo did keep most of the new Mega Evolutions in Pokémon Legends: Z-A as a secret until the game’s release. While many were already anticipated due to leaks, there is one that truly stands out among the rest of the additions to the series.

Froslass Has The Best New Mega Evolution Design In Pokémon Legends: Z-A

In terms of design, Mega Froslass in Pokémon Legends: Z-A may be the very best Mega Evolution introduced in the Gen 9 title. With its new Mega Evolution form, Froslass gets much larger in size, having its body elongated to look like a tall creature wearing a long dress or kimono. The lower end of its body seems to resemble a cloud of icy fog, while the ice stubs it had on its head become fully-formed ice horns.

Getting Mega Froslass should come naturally as you progress through the campaign, though you could use a Pokémon Legends: Z-A guide to locate the creature. During one of the Main Missions, you’ll face a Rogue Mega Froslass, and beating it will grant you the Froslassite Mega Stone. After that, you only need to give it to your Froslass and accumulate Mega Energy to transform it into its new design.

Mega Froslass Is The Perfect Balance Between Old & New In Pokémon Legends: Z-A

Froslass’ New Form Truly Feels Like A Worthwhile Mega Evolution

The Ice- and Ghost-type Pokémon from Gen 4’s Sinnoh region was already an intriguing figure due to its typing, as well as overall design. Additionally, Froslass’ Pokédex entry was creepy, as it mentioned that the creature was the spirit of a woman who died bearing a grudge in the mountains. As a result, she tries to feed on the frozen souls of men, who she tries to lure into her den.

The great thing about Mega Froslass is that it still plays around with this concept. Froslass becomes a lot more human-like in nature with its larger body, and truly resembles the spirit of a maiden, a Yuki-onna, also known as a snow woman – made possible by its long kimono-like body. Furthermore, the icy mist that gathers around its lower body also dialogues with its connection to icy mountains.

The horns on its head are not only a sign of a new evolution stage, but also an oni, a yokai in Japanese folklore. Overall, this design truly feels like a Mega Evolution: it retains a lot of the elements that make Froslass unique, but it gives the creature features that make it look stronger. It may not be as strong as Mega Dragonite or Mega Greninja, but Mega Froslass’ design in Pokémon Legends: Z-A surpassed expectations and made up for some other Mega Evolution disappointments.
