MCU: Steve Rogers’ Best One-Liners in the Franchise, Ranked

If Bruce Banner is the strongest Avenger, Tony Stark is the funniest. His quips are faster than Thor’s ability to summon lightning. Yet, one of the original six Avengers is overlooked for their comedic contributions, possibly because he’s the ass of the team.

Played by Chris Evans, Steve Rogers is a 100-year-old in the body of a 30-something-year-old, adjusting to a world full of technology. A man out of his time, Steve is a well of sass that keeps on giving. His shining moments mainly occur during Avengers: Age of Ultron, which is the turning point within the MCU’s tone. While Steve Rogers’ appearances are anything but lighthearted, his sass can be mistaken for a disgruntled old man who just wants to rest. Here are Steve Rogers’ best one-liners in the MCU, ranked.

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

7/7 “You get hurt, hurt ’em back. You get killed…walk it off.”

During the Battle of Sokovia against the AI genocidal robot army that is Ultron in Avengers: Age of Ultron, Steve Rogers delivers this prolific line to the team. The Avengers are in synch and with Steve at the front, he delivers this one-liner to the team and their newest recruits, Wanda and Pietro Maximoff. One of the pillars of Steve Rogers is that he doesn’t give up, which is how this epic line translates. Yet, he doesn’t give up due to reckless abandon or wanting a hero’s death, but because he’s going to fight until the fight is over.

6/7 “That sounds like a lot of paperwork.”

After Steve, Sam Wilson, and Bucky Barnes are arrested for breaking the Sokovia Accords in Captain America: Civil War, Tony attempts to reason with Steve. For Steve and his team to be released, he has to sign The Sokovia Accords. This request is the final nail in the coffin for him. For years, he and Tony were at odds over protecting the Earth and its inhabitants. When Tony explains he’d have to arrest himself, Steve makes this joke in an attempt to ease the tension. For both Avengers, the Sokovia Accords were a defining moment in their relationship, even though Steve didn’t want to break anything apart.

5/7 “You had to ask.”

As much as Steve had taken the leadership role in the Avengers, he also found harmony with his fighting alongside the God of Thunder himself. Upon their initial introduction, Thor and Steve did not get along. Thor still viewed humans as petty, while Steve was still adjusting to a new world with aliens and gods. In Avengers: Age of Ultron, both have many harmonious fighting moves together. But when Thor challenges Ultron, Steve’s exasperated response is possibly how others feel when they hear his tagline.

4/7 “I’m sorry. Isn’t everything about you?”

The tension between Steve and Tony is the most palpable upon their first meeting in The Avengers. The superheroes asked to help with Loki and the Tesseract are apprehensive and have different ideas for how to handle the situation. Tony’s approach is to joke about anything and everything, possibly putting people at risk, which is a big concern for Steve. Before the team’s escalating argument, he takes a jab at Tony, who wants Bruce Banner to release the Hulk. Of Steve’s one-liners, this comment displays another of his personality pillars: stay focused to keep everyone safe.

3/7 “On your left.”

Of any opening scene in the MCU, the one in Captain America: The Winter Soldier is one of the most iconic. Steve and Sam Wilson are on a morning run at the Washington Mall. Aside from the brilliant line delivered by Steve several times, the scene was actually filmed at the real mall, as Politico reports. Marvel films have been filming primarily in Atlanta, Georgia for several years, but for a character that literally represents the land of the free, at least one scene had to be filmed in the nation’s capital.

2/7 “I can do this all day.”

Previous lines have been pillars of Steve Rogers’ core personality, but this line is his foundation. “I can do this all day” is uttered many times throughout the MCU, but none is more vital to that first utterance in Captain America: The First Avenger. Before audiences know Steve wants to join the army, and that he doesn’t like bullies, they know one thing for certain: he won’t back down from a fight even if he can’t win. This brazenness is why he threw himself on a dummy grenade and why Dr. Erskine chose him to be the Super Soldier.

1/7 “Avengers! Assemble!”

This was the culminating moment of the MCU. Everything that was once broken was repaired. Tony and Steve were reunited, Thanos was going to die, and the all female superhero scene, though brief, was beyond epic. Yet, each Marvel fan was waiting for two moments with Steve Rogers. The first moment was summoning and wielding Mjölnir in the final battle. A final moment fans wanted was the epic line from the comics. Even Chris Evans said this is his favorite line, in an interview with Illuminerdi.
