The hit film Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 has now overtaken a movie that was released before most of its target audience was even born. The horror sequel is aimed at younger crowds, as was its predecessor, which shocked the industry and grossed nearly $300 million worldwide a couple of years ago. Directed by Emma Tammi, both Five Nights at Freddy’s movies have received poor reviews, but this hasn’t affected their box office performance in the least. The new film is now on the verge of passing the coveted $100 million mark at the domestic box office, having already overtaken a handful of past and recent hits. Besides fellow Blumhouse horror sequel Black Phone 2, the movie has now overtaken the $96 million lifetime domestic haul of The Others.
Released in 2001, the movie made a splash at the box office and earned positive reviews. But it has somehow slipped through the fingers of public consciousness in the two-and-a-half decades since. The Others is now mostly remembered for its shocking twist ending, which has to be among the best of its era, perhaps alongside those of M. Night Shyamalan‘s The Sixth Sense, which debuted two years prior, and Frank Darabont‘s The Mist, which would roll into theaters five years later. Directed by Alejandro Amenábar, The Others featured Nicole Kidman in the lead role, and grossed more than $200 million worldwide against a reported budget of $17 million.
‘The Others’ Won Spain’s Highest Film Accolade
The Gothic horror film earned positive reviews, and is now sitting at a “certified fresh” 84% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, where the critics’ consensus reads, “The Others is a spooky thriller that reminds us that a movie doesn’t need expensive special effects to be creepy.” It also won the Goya Award — the Spanish equivalent of the Oscars — for Best Film. Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 is probably not winning any accolades, however, with its 15% score on RT and poor reviews. The movie has made more than $170 million globally so far, and will likely pass the $200 million mark this weekend. But the chances of it matching its predecessor’s performance seem bleak at this point. You can watch Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 at home, and stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
