There is no king like King Kong, and he rules the MonsterVerse. For those who deem it fit to challenge his authority, King Kong will be dishing out a new load of punishment in the new, upcoming prequel series. The new story comes from Titan Comics, and following the success of Return to Skull Island, this signifies the second Skull Island prequel from the publisher. Titled King Kong: Escape From Skull Island #1, the comic will look to further expand the multimedia arm of the MonsterVerse with newer entries coming in. First-look images were exclusively revealed by CBR, with preview pages showing Kong being tormented by, and defending himself against, unknown monstrous enemies with the battle descending into mayhem, as expected. Kong will also contend with Nazis who want to keep him in chains.
As earlier mentioned, Escape from Skull Island is the second MonsterVerse series released by Titan Comics, following the Return to Skull Island series and the success it enjoyed earlier this year. The Escape from Skull Island series is written by Simon Furman, with art by Christopher Jones. The main cover art was delivered by Maria Wolf with variant covers by Jones, Sunghan Yune, and Serg Acuna. The new series seems poised to take on a decidedly more horrifying sort of bloody affair when compared to its predecessor in Return to Skull Island. The animated series follows a group of adventurers stranded on the island who meet Kong.
What Is ‘Escape from Skull Island’ About?
The full synopsis for Escape from Skull Island #1 from Titan Comics reveals what to expect. It reads:
“Trapped on Skull Island, a desperate band of survivors struggles against the land’s relentless horrors while an ancient threat rises from below. But as chaos unfolds, flashbacks reveal Kong’s turbulent youth: his battles, losses, and the primal instincts that shaped him into the island’s sovereign. Now, as hordes of monstrous beasts close in on the stranded humans, the most dangerous enemy of all regains strength to once more challenge Kong’s throne.”
Escape from Skull Island is a must-read for fans of the MonsterVerse, as the comic gives fans the closest thing to a backstory as we can get for King Kong. Both Skull Island comic series serve as extensions of the animated series of the same name, which ran on Netflix for just a single season back in 2023.
King Kong: Escape from Skull Island #1 from Titan Comics will be available for sale on January 28, 2026. Stay tuned at Collider for more.
