Warning: This article contains SPOILERS for Splinter Cell: Deathwatch season 1.Splinter Cell: Deathwatch season 1 provided an exciting new chapter in Sam Fisher’s story as he exited retirement to help Zannia McKenna, and it seems like the duo’s journey is only getting started on Netflix. Based on the legendary video game series, Splinter Cell’s anime successfully managed to adapt this unique universe into a gripping show filled with action.
While the series maintained those popular stealth mechanics that have become synonymous with the source material, Splinter Cell: Deathwatch also incorporated some John Wick-style sequences, which is no surprise considering Derek Kolstad penned the project. Fortunately, the brutal violence worked perfectly, further emphasizing just how ruthless this fictional world can be and how deadly its protagonist really is.
More importantly, the series added some great new characters while telling an engaging story, with Splinter Cell: Deathwatch season 1’s ending leaving the door open for more, and there is already some major news regarding the status of its follow-up.
Splinter Cell: Deathwatch Season 2 Is Unconfirmed
For those who enjoyed Splinter Cell: Deathwatch‘s first season, another installment is understandably desirable, but Netflix hasn’t yet confirmed whether season 2 will go ahead. Currently, there is no definitive news on whether the show will be picked up for another outing or if it will be canceled.
Reviews and general interest will likely determine the project’s fate, as it’ll surely need both to have a healthy future. The early reception seems mostly positive, but Netflix will have the crucial data regarding viewership numbers, and given that the show has only just come out, the platform will presumably take some time before making an executive decision.
With Splinter Cell: Deathwatch‘s timeline taking place after the games, there are no restrictions on how long it could go on for, which is almost certainly why the ending provided the opportunity for future stories. Unfortunately, the anime’s future still remains unknown at this time, but there have at least been some positive updates.
Splinter Cell: Deathwatch Season 2 Latest News
While there is no confirmation of Netflix moving ahead with a second season, the show’s creator is certainly optimistic about its chances. Speaking to Animation Scoop, Derek Kolstad mentioned that while he’d be happy for it to be a one-and-done thing, he hopes the series’ quality has earned the license to do more.
Kolstad talked about expanding on characters like McKenna and Thunder, hinting at the idea that he already has future plans for these new additions. In ScreenRant’s own interview with Kolstad regarding Splinter Cell: Deathwatch, he doubled down on his enthusiasm about these younger agents and where their future could go.
Ultimately, the final decision will lie with Netflix when it comes to the next steps for Splinter Cell‘s TV adaptation, but if Kolstad’s positive outlook is anything to go by, it seems like there is a creative vision to continue Deathwatch‘s story.
Splinter Cell: Deathwatch Season 2 Cast Details
With season 2 yet to get the green light, it’s impossible to know who will be involved if the show is renewed, but many of the current cast are destined to be involved. Liev Schreiber would undoubtedly be the first name on the call sheet, as he voiced Sam Fisher in Splinter Cell: Deathwatch season 1, and the story can’t continue without him.
Even if the series does shift its focus to newer characters, fans wouldn’t take well to the idea of the franchise’s main protagonist being sidelined. Therefore, Schreiber is almost a lock for season 2 unless he has to pull out, in which case the best replacement would be Sam’s original voice actor, Michael Ironside.
Kirby Howell-Baptiste will presumably also be back as McKenna, while Joel Oulette seems likely to return as Thunder, considering Derek Kolstad is particularly high on the two characters. Anna Grimsdottir is also a Splinter Cell staple, suggesting Janet Varney is a safe bet for the rumored second season as well.
Since the show’s main villains were killed off, some new additions would be needed on that front, opening the door to some bigger names getting involved, potentially ones that Kolstad has worked with before. Sadly, until Splinter Cell: Deathwatch is picked up for another outing, the cast remains a mystery, despite the exciting possibilities.
Splinter Cell: Deathwatch Season 2 Story Details
While Splinter Cell: Deathwatch season 2’s story could go in all kinds of directions, it will most likely follow up on the catastrophe of season 1. Although Sam managed to take down Charlie in the end, it came after he caused a fatal explosion at a summit consisting of wealthy and influential figures, including his half-sister.
There may not be an immediate villain to benefit from this devastating event, but it seems inevitable that a new antagonist will rise and be far more powerful due to so many CEOs losing their lives. Therefore, Sam and McKenna return to action looks imminent, as they attempt to thwart the universe’s next big threat.
At least one episode could focus on McKenna’s backstory after Kolstad mentioned her past being an untapped area to explore. Likewise, Thunder may be given a more personal story since he was mainly there to support Grim and Jo while they provided intel for Sam and McKenna’s mission.
Despite all the potential set up for a new installment, there is nothing to prevent Splinter Cell: Deathwatch from centering around a completely different conflict and characters. However, regardless of what direction the show decides to go, expect Sam Fisher to be involved, taking down even more enemies from the shadows.
