One of Disney’s best releases ever, Coco, is suddenly topping the streaming charts this week. According to FlixPatrol, it is now in the Top 10 on Disney+ in more than 20 countries. The film came out in 2017 and became one of Disney’s biggest hits by raking in over $800 million worldwide. It also opened to widespread critical acclaim, and currently holds an impressive 97% critic rating and a 94% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Coco also went on to win the Oscar and the Golden Globe for Best Animated Feature Film and secured its spot as one of the most beloved animated movies of the decade.
The film is directed by Lee Unkrich and Adrian Molina. Unkrich is the same director behind Toy Story 3, and he was also the co-director of classics like Monsters Inc., Toy Story 2, and Finding Nemo. So it’s no surprise that Coco feels just as special. The movie easily stands beside Frozen, Toy Story, and Inside Out as one of Disney’s most emotional and heartfelt stories. The plot follows Miguel, a young boy in Mexico who dreams of becoming a musician even though his family has banned music for generations. On the Day of the Dead, a magical accident sends him to the Land of the Dead, where he gets to learn the truth about his family history.
Coco’s return to the charts makes sense right now because the Halloween season is here. Parents are searching for something spooky enough for the occasion but still fun and safe for kids, and Coco fits that vibe perfectly. There are very few animated films that deal with ghosts and death in a way that is not scary for kids, and Coco takes those ideas and turns them into something endearing and beautiful. Also, The Day of the Dead is just around the corner on November 1 and 2, which makes this the perfect time to revisit Coco.
‘Coco 2’ Is Officially Coming in 2029
During Disney’s annual shareholder meeting in March, Bob Iger announced that the studio is heading back to the Land of the Dead for Coco 2. Unkrich and Molina will be returning to direct, so the sequel is definitely in good hands. The movie is set for a theatrical release in 2029, so there’s still plenty of time to rewatch the original and get ready for Miguel’s next big journey. No other major details have been unveiled yet.
