Tracfone recently unveiled a new home internet option powered by Verizon Wireless. The monthly plan costs $60, and it’s exclusively available online or in-store at Target.
In this article, I’ll share everything you need to know about Tracfone Home Internet. I’ll include what you’ll get for the price and how it compares to other fixed wireless home internet providers.
Tracfone Home Internet Now Available at Target
Earlier this month, Tracfone (Team Clark’s Review) rolled out a new 5G Home Internet service. Like the company’s cell phone plans, its home internet service is powered by Verizon Wireless’ cellular network.
Tracfone Home Internet costs $60/month, and it’s a prepaid service. The plan includes unlimited data, which means you’ll never be charged for additional usage.
According to the company’s website, you can expect typical download speeds between 20-200Mbps. Customers in 4G LTE coverage zones can expect download speeds between 20-50Mbps. Of course, actual download speeds vary based on location, signal strength and network connection.
In addition to the monthly service plan, customers switching to Tracfone Home Internet will need to purchase a special router. The router costs $69.99 upfront, but there are no additional equipment fees.
Currently, Tracfone Home Internet is only available from Target. You can visit Target’s website to purchase the router and service plan online.
If you are thinking about switching to Tracfone Home Internet, be sure to check your area’s eligibility first by entering your address on the company’s website.
How Does Tracfone Home Internet Compare?
If you aren’t familiar with 5G Home Internet, it’s a type of fixed wireless internet service that uses a nearby 5G cellular signal to provide internet access wirelessly throughout your home. Compared to traditional fiber/cable home internet plans, fixed wireless plans are often cheaper. However, fixed wireless plans are often only available in select areas.
To see how Tracfone’s new 5G Home Internet plan compares, I took a closer look at fixed wireless plans offered by other cell phone service providers. In the table below, you’ll see each service provider’s starting price for home internet as well as expected download speeds.
| Provider | Starting Monthly Price | Download Speeds |
|---|---|---|
| Mint Mobile | $30 with an eligible cell phone plan $40 without an eligible cell phone plan | 133-415 Mbps |
| T-Mobile | $30 with an eligible cell phone plan & autopay $50 without an eligible cell phone plan, with autopay $55 without an eligible cell phone plan or autopay | 133-415 Mbps |
| Verizon Wireless | $35 with an eligible cell phone plan & autopay $50 without an eligible cell phone plan, with autopay $60 without an eligible cell phone plan or autopay | LTE Home Internet: 25-50 Mbps 5G Home Internet: 25-300 Mbps 5G Home Plus: 50-500 Mbps 5G Home Ultimate: 85-1000 Mbps |
| UScellular | $39.99 with an eligible cell phone plan & autopay $49.99 without an eligible cell phone plan, with autopay $59.99 without an eligible cell phone plan or autopay | 5G+: 50-220 Mbps 5G: 13-90 Mbps 4G: 8-35 Mbps |
| AT&T | $47 with an eligible cell phone plan & autopay $60 without an eligible cell phone plan, with autopay | 90-300 Mbps |
| Total Wireless | $35 with an eligible cell phone plan & autopay $50 without an eligible cell phone plan, with autopay $60 without an eligible cell phone plan or autopay One-time $99.99 router fee | 5G: 20-200 Mbps 4G LTE: 20-50 Mbps |
| Straight Talk | $35 with an eligible cell phone plan $45 without an eligible cell phone plan One-time $69.99 router fee | 5G: 20-200 Mbps 4G LTE: 20-50 Mbps |
| Tracfone | $60 One-time $69.99 router fee | 20-200 Mbps |
As you can see, Tracfone’s Home Internet is among the most expensive fixed wireless options. At the moment, Tracfone doesn’t offer any discounts for bundling home internet with a phone plan nor for enrolling in autopay. However, the $60 plan does include a 3-year price guarantee.
Additionally, a one-time router purchase of $69.99 is required to activate service. While Tracfone’s router is cheaper than Total Wireless’ router, you can save more over time with Total Wireless by enrolling in autopay and keeping an eligible phone plan. Both service providers utilize Verizon Wireless’ network to provide service.
Although other fixed wireless home internet services are generally more affordable, Tracfone Home Internet may still offer a more cost-effective option than traditional home internet plans. Plus, choosing a fixed wireless service provider relies greatly on what’s available in your area.
If Tracfone is the only fixed wireless service provider available at your address, you may still save money compared to your current internet provider or other available internet options.
