I’m lucky to have a semi-dedicated guest room in my home. Technically, it’s my husband’s office, but it’s also where our overnight guests sleep — a cozy space with room for a queen bed. Because we often have friends and family stay over, I’ve refined my prep routine to a science. Over time, I realized that not washing the sheets right after guests leave makes hosting easier. It might sound strange (or even a little gross), but skipping that immediate laundry step has become one of my favorite hosting habits. Here’s why.
A Neat Room Helps Me Reset After Hosting
I love having guests, but hosting always disrupts our usual rhythm (in a good way). Once everyone heads home, I focus first on restoring the shared spaces. In the meantime, I want the guest room to look neat, even if I haven’t washed the bedding yet. A freshly made bed, even with unwashed sheets, makes the room feel instantly calm and put-together. I’ll tackle the laundry later, but visually, I prefer a tidy, made bed to a pile of rumpled linens.
Our Dogs Love the Guest Bed
We have two Rhodesian Ridgebacks who adore my husband — and his office. Which means they often end up sprawled across the guest bed (much to my dismay). Between dog fur and that distinct “dog smell,” the bedding inevitably needs a refresh before anyone stays over. My cleaning routine is pretty thorough: I wash and deodorize blankets regularly, run the air purifier and diffuser, and vacuum often. But to truly eliminate pet odors and fur, I always wash the sheets or swap in a clean set right before guests arrive (and keep the dogs out afterward).

Here’s the key: This only works because I’m consistent. Since I don’t wash the sheets right after guests leave, I always know that the next time someone’s coming, those sheets need to be washed or swapped for a clean set. It’s a small mindset shift, but it means I never have to second-guess whether the bedding is fresh, and my guests always arrive to clean sheets.
A Freshly Made Bed Feels More Welcoming
For me, making the bed beautifully is part of the hospitality ritual. In addition to clean sheets, I like to make the bedding look extra crisp and fluffy. I spritz the top third of both the bottom and top sheet with water, then smooth them by hand to relax wrinkles (no ironing required). I also fluff the comforter right out of the dryer so everything looks fresh and inviting.
Skipping the immediate laundry step saves me time after guests leave, while still ensuring that each visitor is greeted with freshly laundered, perfectly made bedding. For our home, it’s the best of both worlds: a tidy guest room now and a truly welcoming one later.
