Talks between Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump’s envoy Steve Witkoff in Moscow about how to end the war in Ukraine were “very useful” but much work remains to be done, a senior aide to the Russian president said.

Yuri Ushakov said some of the territorial proposals made by the US, which is trying to clinch a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine, were “more or less acceptable”, but others did not suit Moscow.

A major sticking point between Russia and Ukraine is Moscow’s insistence that Ukrainian forces give up the remaining one-fifth of Donetsk province they still hold.

Ushakov said a “compromise option” on the territorial question had yet to emerge after the five hour meeting on Tuesday between Putin, Witkoff and Jared Kushner, the US president’s son-in-law.

Earlier, Putin accused European countries of undermining Washington’s efforts to end the war in Ukraine.

This is a developing story
