Fireworks accident leaves 1 dead, 4 injured in east Texas



A fireworks explosion in East Texas left one person dead and four others injured amid preparations for a July Fourth celebration.

The incident occurred around 10:30 a.m. Tuesday morning, according to the Upshur County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities responded to reports of a major fire in the area. Officials later said the explosion was caused by fireworks and other incendiary material, KSLA News 12 reported.

An investigation into the incident is ongoing, but officials also confirmed one person had been killed in the fire.

Preliminary details revealed that the fireworks were not intended to be set off, but were being prepared for a later event in that night at the Firehouse Nine Farm Event Venue in Gilmer, Tex.

Images from the the incident showed large black billowing smoke emerging from behind a structure, along with several firetrucks that had responded to the scene.

Police say that no foul play is suspected at this time.
